Challenge

The City's business community needed faster and more reliable Internet services that enabled them to compete in today's high-speed, data-driven world. The City found that many of the local providers could not deliver the bandwidth needed for these businesses to sustain their operations at rates they could afford. The City hired Magellan to assess the feasibility and develop a plan to leverage the City's fiber-optic network to provide business broadband services.

Goals:

  • Support economic development by retaining current business and attracting new industries
  • Make Hudson one of the first Gigabit Cities in the State and market it as a connected community
  • Deliver gigabit, fiber-based broadband services to business districts
  • Support future expansion into neighborhoods to provide fiber to the home

Solution

Magellan’s expert team of business, financial and technical advisors crafted the Broadband Business and Deployment Plan for the City’s broadband service. Magellan’s deep experience planning, implementing and operating broadband networks gave Hudson a partner with the real-world experience to successfully stand up the operation under tight timelines and meet the City’s goals for service availability, on time and on budget.

Success

Today, Velocity Broadband is delivering Internet speeds up to 1 Gigabit to Hudson’s business community. "It's moving faster than we thought," said City Manager Jane Howington. “Offering faster Internet service is a linchpin of the City's economic development plan. The Velocity service is already speeding up the City’s plan to buy land and buildings to double the size of its downtown business district with more office and commercial space, as well as other development plans, Howington said.”
