South Bay Cities Council of Governments Enters Public-Private Partnership Based on Magellan Advisors’ Plan
Denver, CO, July 15, 2019 – The South Bay Cities Council of Governments (SBCCOG) in Los Angeles County, California has moved forward with recommendations from Magellan Advisors to connect its sixteen member cities to a regional fiber-optic loop. SBCCOG has approved a partnership with American Dark Fiber (ADF) to build the network, which will offer gigabit broadband to government facilities, enhancing the services member cities provide to their communities. The network will also support several local health entities, LA Metro, and LA Department of Public Works.
Magellan Advisors has partnered with SBCCOG since 2016, when it assisted in the development of a Fiber Master Plan for the region. Over the past three years, Magellan has worked with SBCCOG to implement the plan and most recently support negotiations to develop a regional dark fiber network through a competitive bidding process.
Magellan facilitated the partnership with ADF and assisted SBCCOG in obtaining funding for the project. With Magellan’s assistance, SBCCOG was awarded funding grants of $4.4 million and $1.2 million from Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the State of California, respectively, to bring the project to fruition.
On July 10, 2019 SBCCOG approved a contract for ADF to begin connecting the fiber loop, with a focus on high-speed broadband services and increased transportation systems management. The services will create improvements in overall mobility within the region and enable smart city services, telemedicine, distance learning, and workforce development.
With Magellan’s assistance, the South Bay Cities have achieved a major milestone for regional collaboration on broadband initiatives in southern California. The sixteen SBCCOG member cities are now well on their way to positively impacting their communities with these regional enhancements to high-speed broadband.
